I wish I had found this years ago. I am always trying to find places to "bookmark" my web finds. Now I can share them with my students in a easy to use way.

reflections
I have fallen behind in my online class, so I have spent the last two days trying to catch up. I never realized that there were Indiana state standards for technology or such a variety of online learning standards in general. I should have, as it makes perfect sense, but I never investigated. That is why I really am liking this class, it is stretching me. I am headed to create a symbaloo account when I am done here and I am really excited about doing it, but I wanted to reflect here first.

I found the Indiana standards to be wordy and I believe they would require too much time to get to the heart of the matter, when planning and assessing. At first I liked the ISTE standards the best. They seem simpler to manage and less wordy in general. I think they get straight to the point, but are deep enough to guide instruction. Then I really liked the iNACOL standards. I like that they fit so neatly into the rubric that was in the appendix. It was so easy to measure how well you were implementing each standard with that rubric. I like the ISTE for the simplicity and the iNACOL standards for how easy they are to assess. As I move into this digital age of instruction I need simplicity but I will also need accountability. I will need to work with them each to determine which I like using the best. I believe at this time it will end up being the iNACOL standards, but I will post again when I have more input.
On December 19th I attended an Professional Development day that my district put on and one session was flipping the classroom and another was google classroom. I am excited to move in this direction and I have spent some time planning a video lesson that I want to use this next semester as a trial. These standards will be very helpful as I move forward and develop these resources and lessons.

20% Time
We had a reading on 20% Time and Genius hour. I think this would be wonderful and helpful to teachers and students. It would take a very concentrated effort to teach our high school students how to use this time wisely, stay on task, and not just play. I spend a lot of time trying to create "gotcha" moments when I plan lessons. I hated being bored in school and seeing everything as irrelevant to life in general. I want to make learning meaningful and relevant and letting them take time to just think on how to use what we are learning, create something with it, apply it to another class or life situation, or just think/imagine, this would tap into those higher level thinking skills we always talk about but find so hard to reach. Unfortunately, we have done a good job of programing our kids to think a certain way, to stay only within our framework, giving just one correct answer, so much so that they so fear making mistakes or getting answers wrong. We have trapped them into thinking that school/education is just for a grade; do it the teacher's way or get a bad grade. I think that allowing students 20% time to create things, use what they have learned in a new way, just research and discover new information on their own would open up a huge learning curve. If only we can train them to see the big picture and not the here and now of I have this free time to do as I wish, with no accountability for how I use it. I think as we start the new semester I may try this in my classes and see what the students create.
starting again
I have created a number of "blog" since I started dabbling with them in 2010. I read other people's blogs and I have admired how other teachers have incorporated using them in lessons, but I just never seem to figure it out. What to say, how to set it up, is it right?, is it relevant?... I am taking a class on blended learning and so I start again with a blog. This time it has a purpose.
